We all love bread, let’s not even try to deny it and the Firehouse bread is THE crème de la crème of bread. Actually, come to think of it, all their baked goods are generally dee-licious! From their hand-crafted loaves, to their freshly baked pizzas, these guys know what’s up in the world of dough. Such is their demand, they’ve even set up a dedicated school, where you can learn all the bakery tricks of the trade. So you’ve no excuse! Here’s the run down on all things Firehouse;
Bake Your Heart Out
Heir Island in beautiful West Cork houses their famed bread school. The school caters for everyone – whether you’ve never set foot in a kitchen before, or you’re a regular Darina Allen, there’s plenty for everybody to learn. Firehouse really make the prospect of baking bread far less daunting and they gift you with a truly fantastic lifelong skill. When you leave, you’ll be well-able to concoct beautiful soda breads, yeasted loaves, savoury snacks and even some sweet treats. Go you!
The Firehouse Bakery is run by chef and baker Patrick Ryan, co-author of Bread Revolution, and as seen on BBC 2’s Big Bread Experiment. The school itself opened in 2012, and provides a hands-on journey through the world of real bread with Patrick himself – we definitely recommend! If you’re planning on booking, best to get in there early, the classes are booked out for the next few months, with some available slots coming up towards the summer. Here’s some more details about the course;
- Return ferry to Heir Island
- Coffee on arrival & refreshments & lunch throughout
- Full day hands-on baking experience in a wood-fired clay oven
- Lunch with wine (with the lovely Roaringwater Bay serving as the back drop!)
- An artisan baker’s goodie bag to take home
- Oh and of course as much freshly baked bread as you can carry!
Overnight accommodation is also optional, with beautiful rooms right next door at Roaringwater Lodge. You can even try something different and take up some sailing with Heir Island sailing school. There’s some really beautiful views surrounding Roaringwater Bay, so it’s definitely worth looking into.
Bread, Bread & More Bread!
If the prospect of baking doesn’t float your boat, you could always pop along to Delgany in Wicklow for a bite to eat in their bakery and cafe. Sourdough loaves and pastry treats are baked fresh daily, with a unique open plan bakery for all foodies to see. Throughout the day, the wood fired oven churns out pizzas and flat breads, while the cafe itself serves fresh soups and sandwiches.
Our favourite? The sourdough Ploughman’s Platter. It comes with a selection of sourdough breads, Gubbeen’s award winning cheeses, Wicklow pressed blue and home made chutney! Yum! Check out their website here, for Menus and course bookings.
Firehouse’s food packaging is entirely compostable – from their coffee cups, to their bakery bags, to their pizza boxes. We are so happy they chose to make the switch – it’s a pleasure working with you!
