Canteen

At Down2Earth, we love to stay connected with our customers. We not only get to work with lots of eco-minded cafes, restaurants and foodies, but we get to try out some of their amazing menus too!

Canteen is definitely what you would call a cult cafe; great food, great atmosphere and a loyal following. The cafe has been shortlisted for the McKenna Restaurant Guide three years running, and has received glowing reviews from the likes of Tom Doorley. The famed food critic called it “a gem of a café, quite minute, utterly committed to sourcing the best local raw materials and cooking them simply and sensitively”. Not bad, right? We caught up with Paul Williams, owner of this little gem on Mallow Street in Limerick, to have a quick chat about his much-loved health food.

We always try to source the finest local ingredients for our customers”. Their menu features some amazing organic produce, such as the award-winning Tipperary’s Sheepwalk Farm steak and Burren smoked mackerel.I get to work with some of my favourite local produce every day, things like Riot Rye sour dough and Mossfield organic milk”.

“I try to create a menu that I myself would enjoy ordering from.  For breakfast I would get the porridge special, this week it’s honey roast pears and hazelnuts. For lunch, I would order a stewpot. Today’s has black eye peas, sweet potato and courgettes”.

Paul has been working with us here at Down2Earth on his food-service packaging, in an effort to reduce unnecessary waste. Takeaway options at Canteen are 100% compostable, where possible. “We are a fast food outlet and wanted our packaging to make as little impact as possible, so it was an obvious choice to go for Down2Earth”. Thanks to Paul and the team, pleasure working with you!

You can check out their blog here, and keep up to date with one of the top cafes in the country!
